Earl Martin Phalen, who spent only 29 minutes with his biological mother before entering foster care, has channeled a lifetime of overcoming adversity into a new children's book designed to inspire young readers facing their own challenges. The book, titled 'Aim High Dream Big,' arrives following Phalen's recent exploration of a U.S. Senate candidacy in Massachusetts, a path he stepped away from to return to his foundational work with children.
Phalen's early life was marked by instability before his adoption into a large family in Norwood, Massachusetts. He has spoken openly about managing anxiety and self-doubt as a child who felt different from his peers. His academic and professional trajectory, however, defied statistical odds for children from similar backgrounds. He graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School, building a career focused on educational equity.
His work includes founding one of the largest charter school systems in North America, which serves 10,000 at-risk children across 23 schools. Through initiatives like Summer Advantage USA, he has impacted the academic growth of 50,000 children. His economic development efforts, including roles with Great Jobs KC and Skilled US, have focused on creating jobs and granting scholarships for low-income families. This service earned him recognition from First Ladies Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, and a Presidential Service Award from President Bill Clinton in 1997.
In 2024, Phalen discussed the success of these programs in an interview with Good Morning America. 'Aim High Dream Big' is his effort to distill the lessons from his personal and professional journey for a younger audience. The book features over 21 illustrations and carries a central message of resilience. 'I wrote this for kids who are still figuring themselves out, who may feel unsure of where they fit or what they're capable of,' Phalen shared. 'My hope is that my story reminds children that no matter what challenge they face, that greatness is already within them.'
The book's release has resonated with educators and families. Dr. Mousson Berrouet, a family physician, described it as 'an inspiring story for schools, families, and communities that champion the greatness within their children.' Since its publication, the book has seen strong demand, frequently selling out on major retail platforms. 'Aim High Dream Big' is currently available for purchase on Amazon and through Ingram Spark.
